Top Contenders Arrive for the 2025 Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup

The countdown is on, and the excitement is reaching a fever pitch as the 2025 Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup nears! This year’s edition promises thrilling action, with elite contenders already arriving on the island, ready to battle for one of the Caribbean’s most coveted horse racing titles.

Leading the charge is the formidable Gay Smith-owned trio—Portfolio, Smokin’ T, and Jerry The Nipper. Smokin’ T and Portfolio, both trained by Chad Brown, and Jerry The Nipper, conditioned by Todd Pletcher, arrive in prime form, with the defending champion looking poised to take on all challengers in this year’s fiercely competitive showdown.
Adding to the international flair are the powerful Saffie Joseph Jr. trained duo—Harrow and Public Sector. Harrow, owned by a Guyanese syndicate, is set to make his much-anticipated Gold Cup debut, while Public Sector will represent the well-respected Melrose Racing team.

The Caribbean rivalry is back in full swing with the arrival of Trinidad and Tobago’s lone representative, The Goddess Nike. Trained by the legendary John O’Brien, she landed on Monday and has been settling in well, determined to make her mark on the grandest stage after Trinidad’s absence in recent years.

While this year’s Gold Cup has seen a slight dip in entries, the quality of the field is undeniably top-tier. Harrow and Smokin’ T boast outstanding Equibase speed ratings of 112, earning overall ratings of 130 and 138, respectively. Jerry The Nipper leads the pack with the highest rating of 140, followed closely by Portfolio and Public Sector, each rated at 135.

The Goddess Nike enters as the underdog with a rating of 67, while the Barbadian contingent, Vividly and Show The Money, carry ratings of 125 and 98, respectively. Despite the disparity in ratings, horse racing fans know that anything can happen on race day, and upsets are always in the air!

A notable absence this year will be the iconic red and black silks of the late Sir David Seale’s stable, as connections have opted to enter Renaissance Frolic and Brilliant News in the Sandy Lane Spa Sprint instead.
With an electrifying mix of international and regional stars, the 2025 Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup is shaping up to be an unforgettable spectacle of speed, strategy, and sheer determination. Buckle up—this is one race you won’t want to miss!
